A Gay Dad Sounds Off on the Elementary School Mob That Cancelled a Play About a Gay Penguin Family

We are penguins

There was a significant hearing this week on Tuesday about same sex relationships and whether to ban them. You likely missed this one because you were focused on that OTHER hearing in front of the Supreme Court, the one on whether all states in the union should perform and recognize same sex marriages.

No, this hearing was smaller, with less attention and could have been held in what might be described as a wholly alternative universe.

This hearing was in front of a school board in Catheys Valley, Mariposa County, California. It was held in a place where same sex marriage legally exists without question.

Unlike the Supreme Court, which was surrounded by folks waving banners of equality, tolerance and the love that creates families, this hearing was full of people who wanted none of that and took offense against anyone who did not look and act like them.

  1. Unfortunately the information in this article is incorrect. I work at the school and know that there are members of the school community working hard to maintain an environment of kindness, caring, and acceptance.

    • My apologies, Barbara. I’ve sort of been preoccupied with other things as opposed to the ridiculous amount of maintenance these blogs require. You have, however, piqued my interest on gathering more information regarding the events that unfolded in Sierra Foothill Charter School in Mariposa County, California. I’m actually rather glad you’ve brought this to my attention — it’s caused me to check my sources and such before reblogging something. For this, I do thank you, Barbara.
In my research thus far, I have found several articles (including one from the Mariposa County Gazette, which you can see here, though I have a feeling you’ve already seen it. http://www.mariposagazette.com/news/2015-04-09/Front_Page/Penguin_tale_generates_controversy.html ) I do not discredit the fact that, yes, of course there are people advocating for peace and tolerance! Yes! That is what should be occurring, so kudos to those who are doing what it inherently right. However, in your comment, it seems as though you’ve discredited the
      well
entire point of the article and situation at hand?
Nobody is saying anything that this has escalated, because – well, I personally don’t know that and can’t claim such a thing. But the fact of the matter is, *enough people disliked the idea of a play about gay penguins in a kid’s school that the board voted it down.* This is an issue. I’m not saying people don’t have a right to believe in what they believe in, or have whatever morals they have, but they could have simply not attended the event, WHICH they were invited to do. That, apparently, was not enough. Please keep advocating for awareness and tolerance, though. And again, I apologize for having kept you waiting for such a long time. Best of luck and have a wonderful day!

P.S. I did end up emailing Ms. Melissa Gibson for confirmation and more information on what has happened. I am awaiting her response now. I’ll be sure to link you to her response. 🙂
      xx Cat
